GSB-Repave®

image GSB-Repave® is a versatile, in-place asphalt recycling additive that stretches dollars and saves resources. It is a gilsonite-enhanced emulsion that has superior blending characteristics with recycled asphalt millings, allowing coarse and fine aggregate to be worked into a consistent, malleable finished product that will exhibit good Marshall Stability and is very resistant to cold temperature cracking. GSB-Repave can be blended via pugmill, blade mixing, or in conjunction with a road reclaimer of almost any kind. Matte finishing prior to compaction can be accomplished using a blade, paver, or other means suitable to the owner.

New pavement costs are escalating, and budgets are shrinking. Raw materials are becoming increasingly harder to find and properly permit. Because of these and other factors, more affordable and creative ways are needed to maintain roadways. A viable and environmentally-friendly alternative is the utilization of existing, already in-place asphalt. The byproduct commonly referred to as RAP (recycled asphalt pavement) can be blended with GSB-Repave to give great benefit from this already-owned resource. The process is relatively simple, but requires the use of high-performance oil such as GSB-Repave to rejuvenate, blend, and reconstitute the RAP. Because of its unique formulation, GSB-Repave is easy to use and works remarkably well.

Repave

Options for use are flexible and highly customizable, depending on your unique situation. Equipment availability, location of project or millings, job site, time allocation, and more can all be factored in and accommodated. A GSB-Repave project can begin with a base stabilization if desired, and then continue with the asphalt recycling portion of the work, laying via paver or blade, and ultimately sealing the project with a high performance chipseal and fogseal.

Complete GSB-Repave road rebuild, resurface, and sealing projects have been done at savings of up to 60% compared to the cost of new pavement. Recycled pavements utilizing GSB-Repave also show superior crack resistance and longevity. In summary, the economic and environmental benefits from using the product are enormous.

Product Description:

GSB-Repave® is a solvent-free, cationic, slow-setting emulsion, specifically formulated for use in asphalt recycling. It has been lab formulated and field tested to work in all types of cold asphalt recycling methods. This emulsion is very easy to handle, apply, and work with, plus it contains mixing and aggregate coating characteristics superior to other products on the market. GSB-Repave® emulsion is one of several high performance mineral modified emulsions offered by Asphalt Systems, Inc. (ASI), and is formulated to maximize gilsonite’s unique qualities. It is an effective means for recycling asphalt pavements, and should be considered as one of the preservation products and processes in your tool box of solutions. Storage and Handling Instructions

GSB-Repave® may be stored and handled like any standard asphalt emulsion. If on-site storage will be utilized by the customer, vertical storage tanks equipped with heat and a slow revolution mechanical agitator should be used. Storage and handling temperature for this emulsion is recommended to be between 80 and 140 degrees F. The concentrate emulsion should not be subjected to freezing temperature. Transferring the GSB-Repave® concentrate emulsion should done using a positive displacement gear pump.

Application and Use Instructions:

Equipment:

GSB-Repave® emulsion is extremely versatile and may be used with a variety of different mixing units. It can be mixed in place with common recycling trains; it can be milled, windrowed and blade-mixed on the roadway; it can also be milled, hauled and processed to whatever degree the owner wants in an offsite location with the oil being blade-mixed into the RAP; or, a Pugmill may be used. Equipment should all be in good working condition, with care being taken to calibrate and use as designed.

Dilution:

GSB-Repave® is formulated and designed to be used in concentrate form. If the mix design calls for higher moisture than what is present in the RAP, then additional moisture should be added by other methods and not by diluting the emulsion.

Emulsion add Rate:

In the process of using GSB-Repave®, a mix design should be done by the owner to determine an ideal percentage rate of emulsion to be added to the RAP for best performance. This recommendation will be a good point of beginning, with some minor field adjustment possibly being made during construction.

Cure Time:

The cure time on a recycled asphalt pavement will depend on several factors involved with the project. The first of these variables is the depth of the RAP placed on the project; the deeper the mat is laid, the longer it will take to hydrate water out of the mat. The other strong variable in this process is weather, with humidity, ambient and surface temperatures factoring in. In general, several days of dry weather should be experienced before considering the application of a cover coat on the new RAP.

Application Precautions:

As stated above, a mix design should be done to help give the owner guidance for desired results. Beyond this, projects should be planned with weather as a primary consideration. Cold nights and cool days will hinder the project; it will be much easier and predictable to work in the warmer weather of summer. Working with GSB-Repave® during freezing night time temperatures is not advised. Water in the emulsion and the water added to achieve optimum moisture content for compaction and performance needs to hydrate out of the mat, so that it can be sealed. GSB-Repave® it is not recommended for use in freezing temperatures. Addition of other Materials:

GSB-Repave® has been formulated and engineered to be used as stated in this document. It is not recommended for use with additional chemicals or additives unless called for in the mix design or expressly recommended by ASI personnel. Asphalt Systems, Inc. assumes no responsibility for problems resulting from the mixing of other additives or other materials with the GSB-Repave®.

Clean up:

GSB-Repave® that has not dried may be cleaned up with water. Dried GSB-Repave® may be removed with degreasing solvents. GSB-Repave® should be removed from skin using industrial hand cleaners and skin creams.
